Surgery is the treatment of injuries or disorders of the body by manipulation using instruments. Over the last 30 years, the techniques used at Abbotsford Animal Hospital have increased dramatically. The doctors at Abbotsford have spent years continuing to grow their skills as the technology evolves.
We began using CO2 lasers in the mid 1990’s. Your pet’s health and comfort is as important to us as it is to you. The use of the CO2 laser for surgical procedures has many benefits over more traditional surgical techniques, including:
Less Bleeding: As it cuts, the laser seals small blood vessels. This drastic reduction in bleeding enables a number of new surgical procedures that are not practical with conventional scalpel.
Less Pain: The CO2 laser beam seals nerve endings and lymphatics, resulting in less swelling and pain. The patient experiences a far more comfortable post-operative recovery.
Less Swelling: Laser energy does not crush, tear or bruise tissues because the only thing that touches your pet is an invisible beam of light.
Reduced risk of infection: This is one of the unique features of the CO2 laser beam. It efficiently kills bacteria in its path, producing a sterilizing effect.
Quicker recovery time: Reduced risk of infection, less bleeding, less pain and less swelling often allow the patient a quicker recovery after the surgery.
The fiber-optic endoscope has been an enormous benefit to our patients. Foreign objects eaten can be readily retrieved from the stomach. Diseases of the gastrointestinal tract can be investigated with this minimally invasive technique. Biopsies of the stomach, small intestine and large intestine can be taken as a day procedure.
