Ultrasound is a non-invasive, painless method to look inside the body in real time. Not only does it let us look under the skin but it allows us to actually look inside the structure of organs as they are moving. Most images are a combination of black and white, with bone being white and water being black; and individual tissues are varying shades of grey. Some advanced equipment includes colour and offers three dimensional images.
Most people are familiar with ultrasound as it relates to pregnancy. But did you know that ultrasound is used to look at almost all the organs of the body? Liver, spleen, kidneys and adrenal glands; as well as the heart, eyes, muscles and tendons.
Ultrasound is exceptionally safe, often being done with no sedation at all. Age, and illness do not impact on the ability to perform an Ultrasound.
In York Region, Dr. Bocknek and Dr. Clark have been performing abdominal and cardiac ultrasounds at Abbotsford Animal Hospital since 1996. Often, Ultrasounds can be done on a same day basis.
